Neutrophils<\/span><\/h2>\n

Neutrophils are a central part of your immune system and therefore defence against infections. They are produced in the bone marrow and your most abundant type of white blood cell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

When you are sick or injured, antigens prompt your immune system into action. Antigens include bacteria, viruses, fungi, cancer cells and poisons. White blood cells \u2013 including neutrophils - produce chemicals that fight and kill antigens.<\/p>\n

Certain cancer treatments can lower the number of white blood cells and\/or cause them to work less well \u2013 a condition called immune-suppression.<\/p>\n

Neutrophils are especially important because they are termed \u2018first responders\u2019 \u2013 they patrol freely throughout the body to attack antigens and consume them.<\/p>\n

Neutrophils interact positively with Natural Killer (NK) cells.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Macrophages<\/span><\/h2>\n

Macrophages are a type of permanently patrolling white blood cell. Its name in Greek means \u2018big eater\u2019 \u2013 and that\u2019s what it does.<\/span><\/p>\n

A macrophage can detect a site of infection, move to it and engulf and digest the pathogens \u2013 harmful microbes, foreign substances, cellular debris and cancer cells.<\/p>\n

Macrophages also play an important part in wound healing and immune regulation.<\/p>\n

Macrophages \u2013 like Neutrophils \u2013 are a key part of the first line of your immune defence.<\/p>\n

Natural Killer Cells \u2013 also known as NK cells - are a type of white blood cell and a part of your innate immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n
