One of my friends swears he can predict if it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to rain \u00e2\u20ac\u201c because his joints begin to ache.<\/p>\n

Is there really a connection between weather and changes in arthritis symptoms?<\/h1>\n

A study in the British Medical Journal<\/em> has compared 11 million patient visits for joint disorders on rainy and non-rainy days. Contrary to popular belief, it found NO difference in the level of pain patients reported on rainy versus non-rainy days. If anything, there were more visits on dry days!<\/p>\n

But maybe it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s temperature, or barometric pressure?<\/p>\n

Well, a study published in Arthritis Care and Research<\/em> found NO association between \u00e2\u20ac\u0153temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, wind direction and precipitation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n

So is it a myth that weather affects arthritic symptoms?<\/p>\n

Maybe not \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a 200 patient study published in the American Journal of Medicine<\/em> found that knee pain increased modestly when temperature or barometric pressure changed.<\/p>\n

What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really going on?<\/p>\n

It is true that we do tend to remember the times when two events occur together \u00e2\u20ac\u201c like a friend phoning just as you were thinking of her. But you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t remember all the times when you thought of that friend and she didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t phone! It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s called false synchronicity.<\/p>\n

Observing that wet weather and joint pain coincided is inevitably more memorable than not noticing that you felt neither better or worse on a rainy day.\u00c2\u00a0 If you rely only on memory rather than on more data-based evidence, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to find a link where none exists.<\/p>\n
