L. gasseri can help reduce IBS symptoms and bloating, improve intimate health and support weight control

Probiotics work by improving the ratio of "good" to "bad" bacteria in the gut. This helps to relieve a wide range of conditions.

L.gasseri is particularly important for women's health issues.

This article is written by Colin Rose, a Senior Associate Member of the Royal Society of Medicine, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

He is the Founder and Director of Research and Innovation of Uni-Vite Healthcare and author of a recent book: Delay Ageing: Healthy to 100, where he reveals how to slow ageing and, therefore, help prevent later-life illness.

L. gasseri and IBS

Studies show that L Gasseri can help reduce IBS symptoms and specifically abdominal pain. A well conducted clinical trial [Ref 1] found that:

“L. gasseri was able to to reduce IBS symptom severity scores, especially it had effects in relieving abdominal pain”

Since reducing IBS problems is a main focus of MicroBiotic Plus, we are pleased that the addition of L. gasseri to our other 9 strains should strengthen this outcome.

when to use

L. gasseri and women's health

A healthy vagina is dominated by Lactobacillus species. When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to bacterial vaginosis – inflammation of the vagina – which is a problem affecting around 20% of women.

At least two studies show that L.Gasseri can help to improve vaginal health and prevent bacterial vaginosis[Ref 2, Ref 3] .

Other research shows that two other strains in MicroBiotic Plus help this condition – being Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. [Ref 4]

L. gasseri helps achieve and maintain a healthy weight

The bacteria in your digestive tract directly influence the way your body absorbs nutrients from food and uses them for energy.

So, good bacteria ensure more energy is produced – and less is stored as fat. That may help you maintain your weight as you get older. Or improve the rate of loss on a calorie-controlled diet.

Controlling weight becomes increasingly difficult as time goes by. Partly because your metabolism slows with age. Partly because we generally become a bit less active. Partly because we lose muscle mass, and muscle burns fat [Ref 5]. That whole process starts from as early as your 30s! ☹

Lactobacillus strains of probiotic like L. gasseri can help enhance the results of a weight loss programme.

Microbiome diversity helps keep you slim

It is well established, from both human and animal studies, that moderate-weight people have different gut bacteria from those who are overweight or obese [Ref 6A], Ref 6B]. And people who have a greater diversity of microbes in their microbiome tend to be leaner.

Certain probiotics help lower the number of calories you absorb – especially from dietary fats. They work by supporting the function of bile, which promotes the excretion of fats and loss of belly fat. L. gasseri has been shown to be such a probiotic strain [Ref 7].

A study in the The Journal of Medical Food [Ref 12]  confirmed that when a probiotic supplement of Lactobacillus gasseri was taken over 12 weeks:

“Visceral adipose tissue was significantly decreased in the treatment group compared with the placebo group”. And that: “Waist circumferences were significantly decreased.”

The reduction in visceral fat is important because this type of fat, surrounding internal organs, causes inflammation and is especially dangerous to health. The results were repeated in a Japanese study [Ref 13].

6 probiotics that can contribute to a healthy weight

There are many dubious claims around weight control, but the evidence is that 6 out of the 10 strains in MicroBiotic Plus may contribute to healthy weight loss and weight maintenance – when combined with a calorie-controlled diet. These strains are:

Lactobacillus gasseri
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Lactobacillus plantarum
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Lactobacillus casei
Lactobacillus acidophilus

Bear in mind, though, that weight management is influenced by many factors, including diet, physical activity, genetics and more. So individual results can and will vary. Probiotics are just one piece of the puzzle – but the research suggests they can be an important piece.

It's worth noting that all the weight loss trials were over 12 weeks. To see results on any of the above issues, you do need to give it time. Improving your microbiome health does not happen overnight!
