And only some are hardy enough to survive the acidity of the stomach, where they can then colonise and start to take effect.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, a supplement with <em>just one<\/em> strain will not give you broad enough benefits. So our assessment of the best combination \u00e2\u20ac\u201c based on the referenced research \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is given at the end of this article.<\/p>\n<h5>Probiotic strains which improve immunity<\/h5>\n<p>There is very good evidence that a probiotic with enough CFUs of hardy strains can improve the balance of your gut bacteria. More \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfriendly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bacteria crowd out the pathogenic or disease-causing bacteria. That then increases your immune defence against infections, allergies and even incipient cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Strains that appear especially potent in <strong>immune boosting<\/strong> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Lactobacillus<\/em> <em>acidophilus DDS1<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Bacillus coagulans<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Bifidobacterium lactis<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Bifidobacterium longum<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Lactobacillus plantarum.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These strains have been shown to help reduce respiratory illnesses and inflammation generally. In one study, reported in the American College of Nutrition, older patients were supplemented with a combination of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium lactis<\/em>, <em>Bifidobacterium longum,<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus casei<\/em> and <em>Lactobacillus gasseri<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or a placebo.<\/p>\n<p>After taking the probiotic supplements for three weeks, their inflammatory markers decreased and gut bacteria balances became more like those of young, healthy people.<\/p>\n<h5>Relieving candida and yeast infections and reducing fatigue<\/h5>\n<p>There are many factors that can upset the delicate balance of microbes and lead to an overgrowth of harmful microflora such as yeast. This can be an especially common problem for women.<\/p>\n<p>The various <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> probiotic species produce natural disinfectants that help maintain both an optimal pH and a healthy balance of beneficial microorganisms in the vagina. They achieve this by helping exclude harmful bacteria and other pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian research with <em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em>, <em>Lactobacillus plantarum<\/em> and <em>Lactobacillus reuteri<\/em> showed that daily probiotic therapy is both safe and effective at changing the vaginal microflora from a pathogen-friendly environment to a pathogen-resistant one. \u00c2\u00a0The result was to help clear yeast infections. Butyrate improves mineral and fat absorption and also exerts a strong anti-inflammatory effect, so it is not surprising that it is associated with several important health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>These include a reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer, of colitis, of heart disease and improved brain health \u00e2\u20ac\u201c because <strong>inflammation<\/strong> is a driver of all these apparently diverse conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Studies using the probiotic strains of <em>Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis<\/em>,\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus casei<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em> have shown a reduction in inflammation within brain neurons. This in turn led to a significant (-48%) reduction in stress, anxiety and depression. Other studies even suggest some possible memory improvement.<\/p>\n<h5>Improved heart health<\/h5>\n<p>The indirect anti-inflammatory benefit of probiotics explains why certain probiotics may help reduce the risk of heart disease. But they can have another positive effect. Certain strains appear to lower LDL \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbad\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cholesterol \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in studies. They include <em>Lactobacillus acidophilus<\/em>,\u00c2\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium lactis<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus plantarum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h5>IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) symptom alleviation<\/h5>\n<p>IBS is, of course, an inflammatory illness which can manifest itself as bloating and abdominal pain.\u00c2\u00a0 A combination of <em>Lactobacillus<\/em>,\u00c2\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Streptococcus<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0strains appears the most effective.<\/p>\n<h5>Constipation relief<\/h5>\n<p>Probiotics that are shown to relieve constipation include <em>L. acidophilus<\/em>,\u00c2\u00a0<em> L. plantarum <\/em>and <em>L. rhamnosus.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5>Diarrhoea treatment and risk reduction<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Probiotics that reduce the risk of diarrhoea (which can often follow a course of antibiotics) include <em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em>,\u00c2\u00a0<em>B. coagulans,<\/em> and <em>Lactobacillus acidophilus.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5>Improving the rate of weight loss<\/h5>\n<p>Probiotic strains improve the balance of gut bacteria and some studies show they may reduce the amount of fat your gut absorbs.<\/p>\n<p>In one three-week study<strong>,<\/strong> women taking <em>L rhamnosus <\/em>lost twice as much weight as those on a placebo \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and they continued to lose weight afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em>, <em>Lactobacillus gasseri<\/em> and especially the combination of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium lactis <\/em>appear the best strains if you want to improve the effectiveness of a diet \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but they can improve the rate of weight loss only in <u>combination<\/u> with calorie reduction.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Summary \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the best probiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>One point often overlooked is that probiotics are live and need to feed if they are to colonise the gut. Their \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is prebiotic insoluble fibre.<\/p>\n<p>So an effective probiotic should include some prebiotics as an initial food source. You then should further help them to establish themselves by ensuring you have enough fibre in your diet. That comes from vegetables, fruits, beans, oats, whole grains and pulses.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, adding probiotic-rich foods to your diet is also important.
