It is diagnosed as a specific illness when you have at least one episode of abdominal pain per week.<\/p>\n<p>There are actually four medically identified types of IBS:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>IBS-D<\/strong>: Diarrhoea-predominant<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Frequent loose bowel movements and cramping pain\/sense of urgency.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>IBS-C<\/strong>: Constipation-predominant<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Infrequent bowel movements, usually accompanied by pain\/sense of blockage.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>IBS-M: Alternating between diarrhoea and constipation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Also called &#8220;Mixed&#8221;. Commonly with more frequent pain.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>IBS-U: Unspecified<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For people who do not fit into one of the above categories, although this is often after an infection. Symptoms vary, but with gas, bloating and discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>In almost all cases, bloating is a factor, and in most, excessive gas and abdominal pain, too.<\/p>\n<p>And in addition to the often distressing physical symptoms, IBS can cause mood problems and even depression, via the well-identified gut-brain connection. Sleep disturbance is quoted by some 60% of sufferers, leading often to a general feeling of lethargy and tiredness.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>So tackling the root cause of IBS is a priority.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-3074-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"2\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<h2><strong>What is the root cause of IBS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria \u00e2\u20ac\u201c many beneficial and indeed vital for overall health, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uni-vite.com\/microbiotic\/strong-immune-system-starts-in-the-gut\/\">for a strong immune system<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, for weight maintenance, and even for creating certain vitamins like vitamin K.<\/p>\n<p>But some bacteria are harmful. It is when these harmful bacteria become too great a proportion of the overall gut flora \u00e2\u20ac\u201c termed <b><i>overgrowth<\/i><\/b> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that trouble flares. Over 80% of IBS patients suffer from this overgrowth, which causes sensitivity and inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>So overgrowth of harmful bacteria is at least one cause \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and probably the key cause \u00e2\u20ac\u201c of IBS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-3074-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<h2><strong>How do probiotics help in IBS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uni-vite.com\/microbiotic\/how-to-take-probiotics\/\">take probiotics<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (good bacteria), you begin to change the balance of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcgood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbad\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bacteria in favour of the good \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and IBS inflammation and symptoms start to reduce.<\/p>\n<p>The total bacteria in your intestines is collectively called your Gut Microbiome. People with a higher diversity of bacterial species and strains of bacteria are generally more healthy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-3074-0-0-4\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"4\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<p>The <em>Canadian Society for Intestinal Research<\/em> has usefully summarised the ways probiotics work as follows.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lining the surface of the gastrointestinal tract and stopping harmful organisms from reaching it &#8211; competitive exclusion<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening the tissue of the bowel wall<\/li>\n<li>Acting as antibiotics against other bacteria, and<\/li>\n<li>Regulating the responses of the immune system, both at the level of the bowel wall and the body as a whole.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-3074-0-0-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image\" data-index=\"5\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-image so-widget-sow-image-default-8b5b6f678277\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><\/div><\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-3074-0-0-6\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"6\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<h3><strong>The most effective strains of probiotic are vital to help IBS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Studies show that people with IBS have lower amounts of the good bacteria <em><strong>Lactobacillus<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>Bifidobacterium<\/em><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0in their guts, and they have higher levels of harmful\u00c2\u00a0<em>E. coli\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Clostridium difficile<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>By increasing the level of the beneficial <strong>Lactobacillus<\/strong> and <strong>Bifidobacterium<\/strong> probiotics, you crowd out and help neutralise the harmful or pathogenic bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>The result is to inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria, to combat inflammation, to reduce gas and bloating pain and regularise bowel movements.<\/p>\n<p>But all these benefits depend on consuming the most effective strains of probiotic.<\/p>\n<p>By analysing the literature on probiotics and IBS it is possible to identify the most effective strains for Irritable Bowel Syndrome which are:<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Lactobacillus plantarum \/ L. plantarum<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>78% of IBS sufferers in a well-designed study reported it as good or excellent in reducing IBS pain and bloating<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Bacillus coagulans \/ B. coagulans<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Shown to improve multiple symptoms including diarrhoea and stool frequency. <em>Bacillus coagulans<\/em> is an exceptionally hardy strain that colonises well in the gut &#8211; albeit it is expensive and therefore not found in many probiotic supplements.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Lactobacillus rhamnosus \/ L. rhamnosus<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>An important strain for IBS generally that also (coupled with <em>L. plantarum<\/em> and <em>Bifidobacterium lactis<\/em>) reduces constipation<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Lactobacillus acidophilus \/ L. acidophilus<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Shown to reduce pain and bloating in 64% of patients, when included with <em>Bifidobacterium lactis.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Bifidobacterium lactis \/ B. lactis<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Shown to reduce pain in 64% of patients when included with <em>Lactobacillus acidophilus.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Lactobacillus casei \/ L. casei<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Irritable bowel syndrome patients tend to have an overgrowth of the well-known harmful bacteria strain <em>Escherichia coli<\/em> (<em>E. coli<\/em>). A 2013 study showed that <em>Lactobacillus casei<\/em> was able to inhibit the impact of this common pathogenic bug.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Streptococcus thermophilus \/ S. thermophilus<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Although <em>Streptococcus thermophilus<\/em> does not directly help address IBS, it should be included in any effective multi-strain probiotic. This is because it is very resistant to the harsh, hot, acidic conditions in the gut (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthermophilus\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 means heat-loving). So re-colonising with good bacteria after a course of antibiotics is increasingly recommended by health professionals.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00e2\u0153\u2026 Reduction in Cholesterol<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A fact sheet from the US <em>National Institutes for Health<\/em> also suggests that a probiotic supplement could help reduce cholesterol levels:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Overall, research suggests that the use of multiple probiotic strains in combination as well as of probiotics containing\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus acidophilus<\/em>, a mixture of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus acidophilus<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium lactis<\/em>, or\u00c2\u00a0<em>Lactobacillus plantarum<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0might reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong>\u00e2\u0153\u2026 Improvement in mood and reduction in depression<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>New Scientist<\/em> reported in 2018 on the development of what they called <strong>psychobiotics<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c probiotics that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uni-vite.com\/microbiotic\/probiotics-for-depression\/\">can reduce the symptoms of depression<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Amounts may be written on product labels as, for example, 1 x 10<sup>9<\/sup> for 1 billion (1,000,000,000) CFU or 1 x 10<sup>10<\/sup> (10,000,000,000) for 10 billion CFU.<\/p>\n<p>Some probiotic brands appear to contain as many as 50 billion CFUs. However, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) in a Fact Sheet for Health Professionals warns that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Higher CFU counts do not necessarily improve the product\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s health effects.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Only trials of multi-strain products found a clinically meaningful improvement in quality of life.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>And use reliable brands<\/h3>\n<p>The NIH also cautions to use reliable brands:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The quoted mass of a probiotic can consist of both live and dead microorganisms and, therefore, has no relationship with the number of viable microorganisms in the product.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Because probiotics must be consumed alive to have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uni-vite.com\/microbiotic\/probiotics-have-multiple-health-benefits\/\">health benefits<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and they can die during their shelf life, users should look for products labelled with the number of CFU at the end of the product\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shelf life, not at the time of manufacture.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In plain English, many of the ultra-high counts may be exaggerated. Some brands claim on the pack (in large letters) that they are using, for example, raw material that contains 20B (20 billion) CFU of probiotics per <u>gram<\/u>.
