Because this university has been researching probiotics \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the best strains \u00e2\u20ac\u201c longer and more intensely than any other<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The basic answer is<\/strong>: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take your probiotic just after a meal \u00e2\u20ac\u201c either breakfast or dinner. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take with a hot drink like coffee \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and make sure the time is consistent each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why this answer, when other internet sources say take on an empty stomach?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Logic of Timing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seeming logic of taking a probiotic on an empty stomach is that the stomach is less acidic then \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and stomach acids can kill probiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this misses the point that when you eat food, the stomach may indeed produce acid to aid digestion \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but the acid is diluted (soaked up) by the food. <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the actual level of acid in the stomach is lower<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the gut environment more hospitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, a study published in <\/span><i>Beneficial Microb<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">es shows probiotic supplements may be best taken with or after a meal containing fat. Why? Because fat helps keep the stomach less acidic, which ensures more bacteria from the probiotic supplements survive long enough to reach the large intestine.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>There is another reason.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hardiest strains of probiotic are called &#8216;spore-based probiotics&#8217;, of which Bacillus Coagulans ProDURA\u00e2\u201e\u00a2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c2\u00a0is a unique and particularly well-researched strain, with multiple health benefits.\u00c2\u00a0 This type of probiotic has a strong acid-resistant outer shell and is better taken with or after food. As one expert puts it: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They use food to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dchitchhike\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 down to the large intestine\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Quality and Strains are Key<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quality of your probiotic is a big factor in how much good bacteria makes it to your large intestine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reputable manufacturer will put higher amounts of probiotics in their capsules than claimed to guarantee that the <strong>amount of CFUs<\/strong> (<strong>Colony Forming Units<\/strong>) in each tablet lasts throughout its shelf life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, certain strains have been subject to far more research than others. For example, Lactobacillus Acidophilus DDS-1 was developed at the <em>University of Nebraska<\/em> as an extremely hardy strain. They also worked on Bacillus Coagulans ProDURA\u00e2\u201e\u00a2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both these strains \u00e2\u20ac\u201c plus 7 other hardy strains \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are in the multi-strain probiotic supplement <\/span><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uni-vite.com\/microbiotic\/\">Microbiotic Plus<\/a><\/span>,<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which also delivers 12 billion CFUs per capsule. They are all strains originating in the human digestive tract, so they are inherently resistant to stomach acid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>PS: Antibiotics, Anti-fungal medications and Butyrate<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on <strong>antibiotics<\/strong>, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take probiotics at the same time. Butyrate is a fatty acid that can regulate your body\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response to insulin, thereby helping you maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
