The antibiotic crisis: Could this be the end of modern medicine?<\/span><\/h1>\n

The UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies recently warned:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 the rise in antibiotic-resistant diseases could trigger a national emergency comparable to a catastrophic terrorist attack, pandemic flu or major coastal flooding.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She is on record as saying we could routinely see deaths from minor surgery if new antibiotics are not discovered \u00e2\u20ac\u201c highlighting the immediate threats that antimicrobial resistance poses. She has called for politicians to act now, and for global action to be taken.<\/p>\n

Her warnings are echoed by Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO). She recently predicted \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthe end of modern medicine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. The use of modern medicine is threatened because antibiotics have been so over-used that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re now almost totally powerless against some \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsuper strains\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of bacterial infection.<\/p>\n

The basic problem is that the bugs breed thousands of times faster than we do \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so they mutate and develop resistance faster than we can modify antibiotics. The frightening implication is that routine operations could become dangerous to carry out, and minor cuts and grazes become potentially life-threatening.<\/p>\n

No New Antibiotics<\/strong><\/p>\n

The problem is that there are no new antibiotics in the pipeline. Indeed no new antibiotic has been developed in nearly 40 years.<\/p>\n

Why? Because there is far more money for the drug companies in developing \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcblockbuster\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 drugs for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and cholesterol. Although these largely only manage the symptoms of disease, their commercial advantage is that people will need repeat prescriptions for the rest of their lives. So they are \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccash cows\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s another issue that should concern us. Too many drugs have limited effect, too many cause unacceptable side effects, and some are outright dangerous. Incredibly, prescription drugs are now the fourth leading cause of death in the US behind cancer, heart disease and strokes, and kill more people every year than road traffic accidents (36,000).<\/p>\n

Natural Preventative Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n
